2nd Lt. Maalathy honoured in Kilinochchi on International Women's Day

To mark International Women's Day, the Kilinochchi District’s Women’s Front of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) organised an event to honour female Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres and recognise the political and social work done by its membership.

Floral tributes were laid in honour of the memory of  2nd Lt. Maalathy, the first female fighter of the LTTE to sacrifice her life in the Tamil struggle for liberation. International Women's Day is marked annually on March 8 and celebrates women's achievements whilst also calling for equality as women still face discrimination because of their gender.

Chairperson of the front Muralini Dhines organised the event while Vijarani Satheeshkumar graced the event as the chief guest. Member of Parliament S. Shritharan and other senior members like E. Saravanapavan, Shanthi Sriskandarajah, Madini Nelson, and Sasikala Raviraj were also present. Lalithakumari Sathyamurthy was honoured with the Mannin Madhavam award for 2024.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
