Marking 50 years since the death of Pon. Sivakumaran, the first Tamil martyr to die in the liberation struggle, several Tamil political leaders and politicians paid tribute to him in Urumbarai, Jaffna.
EPDP leader Douglas Devananda, Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) MP Mavai Senathirajah, President of the Sri Lankan Tamil Government Party, Suresh Premachandran, President of the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front, M.K.Sivajilingam, Secretary General of the Tamil National Party Vindan Kanakaratnam and Former Northern Provincial Councillor M K Shivajilingam were seen among many others paying their tribute to the late Pon. Sivakumaran. Those who atended lit candles and placed garlands in reverence for Pon. Sivakumaran.
Sivakumaran was a member of the Tamil Manavar Peravai (or Tamil Student Federation, TSF) and a leading militant in the early armed Tamil struggle. With decades of Sri Lankan state repression and deadly anti-Tamil pogroms already having taken place, Tamil militant movements began to form. Sivakumaran was involved in assassination attempts on both Somaweera Chandrasiri and Alfred Duraiappah.
