A newly launched archive that hosts the works of Anton Balasingham was launched this week, marking the 14th anniversary since the passing of the chief negotiator and political strategist of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The website – www.antonbalasingham.com – hosts a collection of Balasingham’s interviews and writings in both Tamil and English.
The project was started by a group of Tamil activists who worked closely with Balasingham. The current collection spans from 1979 to 2006, with more additions set to come.
“Our objective is to help the next generation understand the theoretical underpinnings of our freedom struggle and how Bala Anna formulated the key principles of the Tamil Eelam freedom movement,” said Dr A. R. Sriskanda Rajah, one of the curators of the site. The site is expected to be updated regularly, with works such as 'Viduthalai', his philosophical work in Tamil, set to be added this week.
Within hours of its launch however, the website came under attack from hackers who attempted to take it offline. The attack was repulsed and site quickly brought back online, but hacking attempts have continued throughout the day.
“Balasingham’s voice was always feared by the chauvinist Sinhala state, as he clearly and forcefully articulated the foundations of our political struggle,” added Dr Sriskanda Rajah. “We will ensure his legacy continues.”
