Three youths travelling on a three-wheeler vehicle were assaulted by army officials and then arrested for "attempting to attack the army officials" and face prosecution for 'obstruction of duty'.
The incident occurred yesterday afternoon in the Urumpirai area in Jaffna.
The army soldiers who were carrying out routine inspections of those travelling in the Urumpirai area, pulled over the youths in the three-wheeler.
Despite wearing masks to cover their faces, they were told that it was not being correctly worn. The army soldiers demanded that it needed to be correctly worn and after a verbal altercation, the army soldiers then assaulted the individuals.
They were then handed over to the Koppay Police and informed the department that the youths had tried to attack them and that they were not wearing their masks properly.
The Koppay police department have initiated steps to prosecute the three youths on charges of obstruction of duty.
