Batticaloa municipal council calls for thorough investigation of police killings

The Batticaloa Municipal Council passed a resolution today condemning the killing of two police officers in the Vavunathivu area of Batticaloa last week.

The resolution, brought by Batticaloa mayor T Saravanabavan at the Council’s 12th sitting was passed unanimously.

The mayor said the killings had clearly been carried out to disrupt the peace and create chaos for communities.

Members of the Council called for a thorough investigation and said that there were widespread suspicions within the Tamil community that those who were responsible for the current political upheaval could have a hand in the killings.

Since the killing, at least two former LTTE cadres have been arrested and at least twenty individuals questioned by the police. Ramped up operations by the police, Special Task Forces (STF) and the Sri Lankan army have also created a climate of fear in the district.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
