Boris Johnson celebrates Pongal and British Tamils

The UK Prime Minister released a video message to mark Thai Pongal this morning, stating it was an opportunity to “celebrate our fantastic Tamil community”.

Boris Johnson said British Tamils have “long been woven into the very fabric of British life and without [them] our country would be so much diminished”.

“So at Thai Pongal and smack in the middle of Tamil Heritage Month, no less, let’s all take a moment to say a big nandri to our Tamil friends and neighbours.”

Also earlier today, Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, posted a message “Wishing a very happy Thai Pongal to Tamils in London and those celebrating across the world”.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
