University Tamil Societies across the United Kingdom commemorated Maaveerar Naal. At the University of Nottingham, the event featured a performance by the University of Nottingham’s Bharathantyam society, which was specially choreographed with the Maaveerars in mind, incorporating expressive storytelling through dance. The performance was followed by an educational talk by members of Young Revolutionaries in Solidarity.
The Young Revolutionaries in Solidarity are a youth wing of Tamil Solidarity who aim to fight against oppression and for Tamil rights, both in Eelam and internationally. Their most recent work includes a talk at SOAS University regarding the Palestinian struggle and its similarities with the Tamil struggle, as well as collaborating on a Maaveerar Naal talk with Surrey Tamil Society.
Their talk with Nottingham Tamil Society explained the key historical events from the 1970s onwards, emphasising the importance of honouring our fallen martyrs. The talk was followed by a minute silence where the students gathered to reflect and pay their respects to those who fought for our homeland.
Other participating universities saw dance performances, poetry and musical performances honouring the heroes. The images below are from King's College, University of London's Maaveerar Naal commemoration, in collaboration with TYO UK.
