Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of China's CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, has reaffirmed China's commitment to aiding Sri Lanka in tackling its financial debt challenges and reaffirmed Beijing’s support for Sri Lanka’s sovereignty.
"Sri Lanka remains a reliable strategic partner," Wang Yi, director of China’s Foreign Office, claimed.
Yi’s statement follows a meeting at the seventh China-South Asian Expo with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena. In this meeting, Yi praised Sri Lanka's steadfast friendship and support on issues important to China's interests.
Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Gunawardena thanked China for its unwavering support in safeguarding the island’s autonomy and sovereignty, especially during adversities. He noted flagship collaborations like the Colombo Port City and Hambantota Port play a pivotal role in advancing connectivity and sustainable development.

Gunawaredena’s statement follows repeated attempts to by China block UN resolutions pursuing accountability for war crimes in Sri Lanka.
Yi further claimed that China’s commitment to the island extends to supporting Sri Lanka's self-reliance and overcoming developmental obstacles, in what he referred to as the "poverty trap" and "non-development" trap. The assurance involves enhancing Sri Lanka's independent developmental capacities and hastening industrialization and agricultural modernization.
Gunawardena pledged to expand bilateral cooperation in economy, trade, investment, agriculture, tourism, energy, and innovation - with an eye on food self-sufficiency and expediting vital industries.
