Cricketers team up with Sri Lankan army in Tamil North-East

The Sri Lankan military took part in organising charity cricket matches for Tamils schoolchildren in the North-East last week, alongside Sri Lanka’s international cricketers.

Sri Lanka’s Security Forces Commander for Kilinochchi Major General Amal Karunasekara was garlanded as the chief guest at a ceremony held to launch the 'Murali Harmony Cup 20-20'.

The cup is supported by several Sri Lankan cricketers, including like Muttiah Muralidharan, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.

Mr Sangakarra has previously praised the military’s work in the North-East and was tipped to become Sri Lanka’s ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
