Dozens of bodies – including of children – found in Mannar mass grave

At least 50 bodies have been excavated from a mass grave in Mannar, including those of women and children, reports Journalists for Democracy.

"After examining the dental structure of the skeletal remains we can clearly identify three children with milk teeth," lead investigator Dr Saminda Rajapaksha told JDS.

That number is set to rise as excavations continue at the Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (SATHOSA) premises.

"Most of the human remains have been dumped informally on top of each other," added Dr Rajapaksha, who is also the  Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) for Mannar district. “"We are in the process of classifying the skeletal remains found in 37 days of excavations.”

The discovery is the latest mass grave to be found in the North-East, which the Sri Lankan military continues to occupy.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
