Election campaigning and propaganda to end at midnight today

The Sri Lankan election commission has confirmed that all election laws will come into effect at midnight on Sunday 2nd August (48 hours before the elections); after which all campaign actions for the 2020 parliamentary elections must come to an end.

Activities such as canvassing, visiting houses, giving out leaflets and displaying posters will be prohibited, from then on.

The election commission has also highlighted that social media activism such as on Facebook, Instagram as well as Youtube channels would also be included in the ban on propaganda during the ‘silent period’ until the end of election day. The Assistant Commissioner heading the Election Dispute Resolution Unit, Suranga Ranasinghe, has said that proactive actions will be taken to remove any violations immediately.

The Election Commission has appealed to the public to avoid any unlawful actions during this period in order to conduct an open and impartial parliamentary election.

Mahina Deshapriya, the chairman of the elections commission has also guaranteed that hygienic measures will be upheld by the adherence of health practices.
