A significant development emerged at the conclusion of the second day of excavation at the Kokkuthoduvai mass grave site. The Mullaitivu Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) revealed the discovery of pieces of metal, currently suspected to be remnants of weapons, alongside skeletal remains during the excavation conducted on September 7th.
The JMO made this announcement during a press conference held at the conclusion of the second day of excavation, further elaborating on the findings.
The excavation is set to continue on September 8th, with the newfound discoveries shedding light on the context surrounding the mass grave's origins. The JMO explained that not all of the skeletal remains discovered have been exhumed; the partial skeletal remains of two victims have been recovered thus on the second day.
Notably, the excavation team also uncovered additional clothing items at the mass grave site. However, determining the exact number of individuals within the mass grave based solely on the skeletal remains remains a challenge. Such excavation processes typically result in incomplete skeletal findings.
The pieces of metal discovered among the skeletal remains have raised particular interest. Initial inspections revealed markings on the metal fragments that suggest they could be remnants of weapons. However, a conclusive determination regarding their nature as weapons will require further investigation.
