Flame lit at Mullivaikkal in defiance of crackdown

Civil society leader Velan Swamigal led a vigil on Mullivaikkal beach to mark Tamil Genocide Day, in defiance of crackdowns by the Sri Lankan state, including the lockdown of the areas surrounding Mullivaikkal in Mullaitivu.

Velan Swamigal, joined by a small group of locals, lit a flame on the beach in a small lamp stand fashioned with hands like those destroyed by the Sri Lankan army at the Mullivaikkal memorial ground.

The religious leader also planted a sapling at the site in memory of those killed in the massacres.
