Former Prime Minister and United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremasinghe claimed that “only the UNP can strengthen the home economy and requested the people to elect an UNP government,” according to ColomboPage.
Wickremasinghe addressed a public rally earlier this week, stating that the current government “is not capable of reviving the economy.” He spoke at the rally to promote the victory of the UNP candidates in the district by calling for the formation of a stable government for the future development of the country. He also claimed the formation of coalition governments and a collapsed economy as failures of the current administration.
Wickremasinghe’s statements regarding the economy reiterated the policies in the UNP manifesto, released earlier this month. The manifesto also warned of the economic dangers Sri Lanka was facing, stating there is “a grave danger of falling down an abyss.”
Notably, his push for countrywide stability place Buddhism at the “foremost position” as relayed in the UNP manifesto, leaving the welfare, safety and future of citizens in the North-East in question.
Wickremasinghe also expressed gratitude to supporters stating that the UNP “truly appreciate the enthusiasm of our supporters even amidst this Corona[virus] pandemic.”
