Sri Lankan navy officers assaulted a group of Tamil fishermen, near the coast of Pallimunai beach in Mannar, last month.
The fisherman prepared to go on their usual fishing route after completing a security screening and permit check to the navy officers and getting approval.
However, their boat was stopped and searched by patrolling Navy officials at midnight and the fisherman were subsequently detained at sea for three hours for no apparent reason. The officers then attacked the fishermen with sticks and seized their phones and torch lights.
The attack has been brought to the attention of the Mannar Pallimunai Naval Officer.
This incident follows the violent arrest of 30 Tamil fishermen in northern Kilinochchi last month and after India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar condemned the treatment of Tamil fishermen by the Navy following the deaths of 4 fishermen, last year.
