French Tamils commemorate 12 years since the Mullivaikkal massacre

French Tamils gathered in Place de la Bastille, Paris, to commemorate 12 passing since the end of the Mullivaikkal massacre.

During the demonstrations, Tamils paid respect to the victims of Sri Lanka’s genocide and released white balloons to mourn the tens of thousands of Tamil civilians killed during the final phase of the conflict.

Despite the passage of 12 years, Sri Lanka has failed to hold military or government officials, implicated in war crimes, accountable for these atrocities. The latest report by the UN Human Rights High Commissioner warns that Sri Lanka’s continued impunity will lead to further violations of human rights.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
