Sri Lankan parliamentarian Sarath Weerasekara, the current Chairmen of the Sectoral Oversight Committee for National Security, told a press conference in Colombo that he is about to submit a comprehensive report on the “real state of affairs” to ward off international accountability over mass atrocities committed by Sri Lanka’s armed forces.
Weerasekara said that the report that he has compiled will be to “present the Geneva Human Rights Council with an accurate depiction of our current situation”.
The MP’s comments come on the heels of yet another series of resolutions at the UN Human Rights Council that highlighted the lack of accountability in Sri Lanka for mass atrocities committed during the armed conflict. Sri Lanka has repeatedly rejected multiple resolutions of the global body.
“Why are there resolutions against us? They are mainly because of baseless allegations that we violated international humanitarian laws and international human rights laws,” claimed Weerasekera.
Tens of thousands of Tamils were killed during the final phase of Sri Lanka’s military offensive, with Colombo accused of committing genocide.
