The Working Group of Young Socialists in the Social Democratic Party of Germany, (Jungsozialistinnen und Jungsozialisten in der SPD) also known as Jusos, expressed its solidarity with the hundreds of thousands of Tamil victims who were massacred during the final stage of the armed conflict between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan state in May 2009.
In its social media post, Jusos highlighted the fact that over 10,000 Tamil civilians were steered into government-declared “No Fire Zones” in the coastal area of Mullivaikkal, where they were attacked and killed by repeated shelling.
In its post, Jusos further mentioned the brutal tactics, including widespread sexual violence, torture among other serious human rights violations, that the Sinhala nationalist government committed against the Tamil population of Sri Lanka during the end of the 26-year armed conflict.
The group emphasised Sri Lanka’s continued evasion of addressing the mass killings of the Tamil population, of accountability for the rights violations and of the calls of the Tamil mothers and relatives of the disappeared for justice and an end to state repression. Despite the United Nations mentioning the rights violations within several UN reports and UN Human Rights council resolutions since 2009, “there has been no acknowledgment of the genocide”, it stated.
“We stand for the right to peace of all people and the protection of human rights and we stand in solidarity with feminist civil society and the demand for the demilitarisation of the former war zones”, Jusos declared.
