The Sri Lankan government is not interested in witness protection but is waiting for key witnesses to the 2002 Welikada shooting to be killed, said Sudesh Nandimal, one of the key witnesses to the shooting.
This week, unidentified gunmen shot at the residence of Mr Nandimal, who is currently living with his sister's house in Moratuwa. He escaped unharmed but photographs of multiple bullet injuries to the property's front gate have emerged.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr Nandimal said there had been several assassination attempts against him and other key witnesses, Ada Derana reported.
He also alleged that the former justice minister "Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa attempted to cover up the Welikada massacre in spite of there being compelling evidence against the guilty parties".
"The government has a responsibility to protect key witnesses involved in a high profile investigation such as this," he said, adding that the government however was "complacent" with "no interest in his safety", but was "merely idled awaiting his impending demise".
