Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena said his government would protect Sri Lankan soldiers and the “freedom earned for the country” by the military, in a speech at Temple Trees on Wednesday.
Speaking at a ceremony where houses were being handed over to former Sri Lankan soldiers, the Ministry of Defence quoted the president as stating “he was happy to see the Virusumithuru housing project being carried out for the benefit of the War Heroes who had made great sacrifices to usher in peace and freedom to the nation by defeating ruthless LTTE terrorists”.
“The current government performs to protect not only the freedom earned for the country by war heroes but also the war heroes themselves,” continued Mr Sirisena, according to a quote from the official Sri Lanka President’s Media Division.
In his speech, Mr Sirisena also lashed out at the opposition, declaring that “attempts which are based on the ignoble political conspiracies will never become a reality”.
“The current government has implemented the required program for the country for future”, he added.
Mt Sirisena went on to criticise the media on the island stating that it was responsible for attempting to manipulate public opinion.
During the ceremony, attended by Minister Sajith Premadasa, State Defence Minister Ruwan Wijeywardena and several military officials, the Sri Lankan president handed over 192 houses to members of the Sri Lankan security forces.
