Jaffna Municipal Council passed a resolution yesterday calling for the construction of a new Mullivaikkal memorial monument within the boundaries of the Council's premises.
The resolution was passed unanimously at the first Council session of the year under the chairmanship of V Mannivannan. The resolution comes after authorities toppled the Mullivaikkal memorial monument at the University of Jaffna last week which sparked widespread protests in the North-East and across the world.
The monument dedicated to tens of thousand of Tamils killed by Sri Lanka's security forces at the end of the armed conflict, was designed and constructed by Jaffna University students, many of whom survived the massacre at Mullivaikkal in 2009.
Jaffna Vice-Chancellor, S Srisatkunarajah has since promised to rebuild a 'peace monument' in the place of the destroyed monument but students and the Tamil community have expressed scepticism over the move.
