Jaffna shooting: locals accuse Sri Lankan police

Locals in Kokkuvil, Jaffna have accused the Sri Lankan police of shooting at a house on Wednesday, before raiding the premises and threatening those residing in the property.

The home owner, and father of the youth told reporters "two uniformed police officers came to my house at Pirambadi 2nd Street in Kokkuvil whilst I was not at home, but two of my children were at home."

"The officers enquired after my son to my other two children, naming him. When they were told that he was not at home, they forcibly entered the property and searched for him, threatening my other children."

"After holding my two children at gun point and threatening to kill them, they left the house taking a photograph of my son whom they had come for," the father added.

After filing a complaint regarding the incident at Jaffna police station, the family heard a vehicle by the property the following day during the early hours of the morning, before hearing a gun shot.

"Thursday morning at around 4am we heard the sound of a vehicle's engine in front of our house. Then we heard a gun shot. We stayed inside the house out of fear. After sunrise we went outside and found a spent bullet in front of our house, with a bullet mark hole in the wall of our house by the window," the father explained.

"We've filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission and Jaffna police station, but we are in fear over our son. There is no protection for him," the father added.

The senior superintendent of Jaffna police said the police was searching for a man who has absconded and went to the house to conduct enquiries, however denied firing any shots at the house.

Neighbours however expressed doubt over the police's response.

"Who else has a gun in the Jaffna these days?" asked one local who wished to remain anonymous. "It's either the army or the police."

Jaffna police said they would be conducting an investigation into the incident.
