Jaffna University Students’ Union demands Sri Lanka be referred to ICC

Students at Jaffna University echoed demands for Sri Lankan to be referred to the International Criminal Court, as a rotating hunger strike being carried out by students entered its fifth day.

Jaffna University Arts Students' Union President P. Ujanthan spoke to reporters in Jaffna this morning and called on the international community to exert diplomatic pressure on Colombo in order to ensure justice for genocide.

Hunger strikes are being carried out across the world, as a resolution on accountability for mass atrocities in Sri Lanka is being discussed at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. In London, a hunger strike by Ambihai K Selvakumar, a director of the International Centre for the Prevention of Genocide (ICPPG), has entered its sixth day.

Ujanthan said that the students are demanding that Sri Lanka be referred to the International Criminal Court for genocide and the recognition of the right to self-determination for the Tamil people.
