London’s Mayor celebrates contribution of British Tamils during Thai Pongal

Marking Thai Pongal, Tamil New Year, London’s Mayor alongside a number of British MPs gathered in Ealing Amman temple to celebrate the festivities and thank the British Tamil community for their contribution to life in the UK.

"I know many Tamils came to this country fleeing persecution," Khan told the audience. "Many Tamils came to this country with nothing. But because of your hard work… because of the work of this community, I can tell you, London is the greatest city in the world."

Gareth Thomas, MP for Harrow West and Shadow Minister for International Trade, thanked the Tamil community for welcoming him to celebrations.

In a separate Parliamentary event, Thomas had stressed the need to deliver justice for the Tamil people. Stating that the “only accountability for the terrible human rights abuses was when Sri Lanka lost its trade concessions through GSP+.”

MPs Virendra Sharma and Rupa Huq were also present to celebrate the Tamil New Year.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
