LTTE leader Prabhakaran’s birthday marked in Jaffna

The 69th birthday of Velupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), was marked at several locations in Jaffna earlier today, including outside his childhood home.

Former MP M K Shivajilingam cut a cake in Valvettithurai, the leader's hometown, to mark the day.

Locals also distributed sweets and lit firecrackers, as an increased Sri Lankan security presence was reported.

Prabhakaran’s childhood home was demolished by the Sri Lankan state in 2010.

Meanwhile, University of Jaffna students cut a cake in secret in front of his portrait to celebrate his 69th birthday.

Prabhakaran's birthday was also marked at the Maaveerar memorial in Nallur this evening.

Saplings were arranged into a '69' in honour of his birthday, while sweets were handed out to children.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
