The Sri Lankan army announced that soldiers had been involved in carrying out repair work at a Tamil school in Kilinochchi last month, as the military continued to involve itself with civilian activities in the region.
The military announced that soldiers helped to repair a fence at the Thevanpiddy Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed School in Kilinochchi.
An official website posted photographs of troops posing alongside Tamil schoolchildren.
The latest move by the military comes despite sustained opposition to its continued presence in the North-East, where tens of thousands of troops remain stationed almost a decade after the end of the armed conflict. In particular, the military has begun to intrude on activities in Tamil schools in the region, regularly holding seminars for Tamil schoolchildren.
Despite pledges by the Sri Lankan government that demilitarisation would take place, military activities continue unabated.
