The Sri Lankan military announced that it had held a ceremony at a primary school in Mullaitivu earlier this year, as the army continued its much criticised involvement in civil life in the North-East.
Uniformed Sri Lankan troops visited the Unnapilau Primary School in Mulliyavalai, where they handed out dry rations to Tamil schoolchildren.
The event is the latest in a series of much criticised military involvement in Tamil civilian life. In particular, the Sri Lankan army has stepped up its presence in Tamil schools in the region, which remains heavily militarised. The Mullaitivu district has as many as 1 soldier for every 2 civilians, according to a report released by the Adayaalam Centre for Policy Research and PEARL last year.
