The opposition movement in Mozambique , Renamo, announced on Monday that it would be abandoning the 1992 peace accord with the ruling Frelimo party.
Outlining the reasons behind the decision, a spokesperson for Renamo, Fernando Maxango, said,
“Peace is over in the country. The responsibility lies with Frelimo government because they didn’t want to listen to Renamo’s grievances.”
The announcement comes as it was confirmed that government troops had taken over the Renamo base in the Sofala province of Mozambique.
