Sri Lanka’s president Maithripala Sirisena received an elephant that was donated by the State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi, offering it to a Buddhist temple in Kandy.
In a religious ceremony at Kandy on Friday, Mr Sirisena donated the elephant named “Pan Shwe Maung” to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, after receiving blessings from Buddhist monks.
Several senior monks participated in the ceremony.
The elephant arrived from Myanmar last month after Mr Sirisena reportedly made a request to Ms Aung San Suu Kyi when they met at the BRICS-BIMSTEC outreach summit held in India.
