Police hunt former Sri Lanka soldier suspected of training suicide bombers

Sri Lankan police investigating the Easter Sunday attacks are on the hunt for a former soldier who they suspect may have helped trained the bombers that attacked churches and hotels last week.

The former soldier, named as Bathrudeen Mohammed Mohideen or ‘Army Mohideen’, may have trained the suspects, according to Sri Lankan police.

Their announcement comes after it emerged that more warnings were given to the Sri Lankan security forces and political leaders about the attacks, yet no action was taken.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka’s president has vowed to search “every household in the country” as the security forces have ramped up search and cordon operations across the country. The passing of emergency powers in the wake of attacks grants the security forces wide powers of detention.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
