Protestors demand release of land in Mullaitivu

Tamil villagers in Mullaitivu are demanding release of their land by the Sri Lankan military and have marched one army camp to another in Keppapilavu.

The protest took place on Thursday with demonstrations detailing how the ongoing military occupation of their land has threatened their livelihood and raising concern over the military's plundering of the land's natural resources.

The military occupation of land in the Tamil homeland has been a long-standing issue. While the Sri Lanka government has made policy-level decisions to release lands occupied by the military, the implementation has been sporadic and on an ad hoc basis. The protestors say that they are tired of waiting and that they are demanding action now.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
