A Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian said there are “serious questions” regarding the Governor of the Eastern Province and his links to the National Thowheed Jamaath, a lesser known jihadist group that has been blamed by Sri Lankan authorities for the Easter Sunday bombings that have killed over 300 people.
Addressing parliament this morning, TNA MP M A Sumanthiran also said Sri Lanka’s president “has now become the first person who should take responsibility for attacks” after it was revealed Sri Lankan authorities had prior warning of the attacks.
“Very serious questions have arisen as to the why preventive action was not taken when information was available,” tweeted the official TNA account, quoting Sumanthiran. “Those responsible for this – from the very top – must at the very least resign.”
Speaking earlier TNA leader R Sampanthan called for a new constitution for the island. There have been several rounds of talks and negotiations regarding a new constitution, but few tangible results.”If we are to survive as a country, this commitment must be honoured,” Sampanthan said.
