Special prayers were conducted this morning in the Vavuniya Karumari Amman temple in memory of those killed in the Mullivaikkal massacres, with devotees praying for their souls to rest in peace.
The temple priest Prabhakara gurukkal presided over the proceedings in which the victims were memorialised by ceremoniously lighting divine lamps.
Tamils who lost their lives in the massacre, social activists and a number of others took part in the prayers whilst maintaining social-distancing due to the threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, police were deployed outside the premises of the temple who checked and examined the identity cards of those who entered the temple to attend the prayers.
