Sri Lankan army invited to join UN peacekeepers in Mali

The Sri Lankan army has been invited to join the UN peacekeeping force in Mali, the Sunday Times reported.

Citing a senior foreign ministry source, the paper said the "Government of Mali has sought a Sri Lankan peacekeeping contingent as against troops from Pakistan or Bangladesh", which the source said, "was because of the Sri Lanka Army’s successful military defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), one of the world’s deadliest terrorist organisations at the time."

The Sri Lanka army has been accused of committing mass atrocities against the Tamil people during the final stages of the armed conflict in 2009, and was previously found to be guilty of sexual trafficking and sexual abuse of minors in former UN peacekeeping roles.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
