Sri Lankan military to discuss diaspora at defence seminar in Colombo

The Sri Lankan military is set to host a defence seminar this week, where they will discuss “cyber conflict”, “Ideological Polarization” and “Diaspora communities”.

According to an official military website, the 'Colombo Defence Seminar - 2018', is expected to be attended by about “800 foreign and local participants including 14 local and 13 foreign speakers”.

Amongst the topics to be discussed there is a focus on “Diaspora Communities Amidst & Conflict”. The discussion comes after Sri Lankan president Maithripala Sirisena hit out at the Tamil diaspora earlier this year, stating that reports of human rights abuses “are made by the parties who support the LTTE and living abroad and those who are against the government and security forces”.

The head of Sri Lanka’s army also attacked the Tamil diaspora for criticising the military earlier this year, accusing the diaspora of supplying “distorted, malicious and untrue information”.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
