Sri Lankan minister refuses to answer on military link to Jaffna gangs

Sri Lanka’s Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayake walked out of a press conference in Colombo on Wednesday, after refusing to answer questions on the Sri Lankan military’s alleged connection to gangs in Jaffna.

Mr Ratnayake was hosting a media briefing when he was asked by a journalist on the military link to gangs in the region.

“You also talked about the motorcycle gangs operating in the area,” said the journalist. “A lot of Tamil people have told us “Yes there are motorcycle gangs and they are called military intelligence”.

The minister began to laugh and stood up to leave the press conference.

When asked if that was a yes or no, he responded by saying “I didn’t say anything”.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
