Sri Lankan police disrupt Maaveerar Naal preparation in Kilinochchi

Sri Lankan police disrupted Tamils who were clearing the Kanagapuram thuyilum illam yesterday morning as preparations were underway for Maaveerar Naal.

Citing coronavirus, the police interrupted the cleaning process and recorded the names of the volunteers present. TNA MP, S Shritharan, who was also present, told the police that he was carrying out all tasks while wearing masks and maintaining social distance.

They also interrogated and took statements from the former members of the Provincial Council, Kurukularajah and Pasupathipillai Karaichi Pradeshiya Sabha members.

This is the latest act of intimidation in the intensifying crackdown by the Sri Lankan authorities on remembrance events in the North East.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
