Tamil journalists targeted in crackdown via restraining order

Two Tamil journalists have been targeted for restraining orders by Sri Lankan police, amidst the dozens that have already been issued against Tamil politicians and community leaders across the North-East, preventing them from organising commemorations for Maaveerar Naal.

Koppay police filed the applications at the Jaffna Magistrate's Court, for injunctions against Jaffna-based journalists T Premananth and T Kandeepan, alleging that the journalists were involved in planning Maaveerar Naal activities.

The Sri Lankan state has been ramping up its crackdown on commemorations of Maaveerar Naal, the Tamil national remembrance day for fallen LTTE fighters, with police obtaining court injunctions against commemorations in several districts and both police and Sri Lankan army setting up roadblocks and checkpoints around LTTE cemeteries.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
