Tamil man arrested under PTA for 'promoting LTTE ideology'

A Tamil man was arrested under the notorious Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for allegedly 'promoting Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) ideology'.

Ganapathipillai Mohan, also known as 'theatre Mohan', was arrested by Eravur police earlier this week for allegedly sharing a photo of LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran.  Eravur police also seized a mobile phone and an Apple iPad.

This is the latest in a string of arrests as Sri Lanka escalates its use of the PTA on Tamils and Muslims on trumped up charges.

Last month, Jaffna Mayor, V. Mannivannan was similarly arrested by Sri Lanka's Terrorism Investigation Department (TID) under accusations of attempting to resurrect the LTTE.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
