Tamils call on Sri Lankan army to release occupied Theravil Thuyilum Illam

Tamils have called for Theravil Thuyilum Illam to be released by the Sri Lankan army who are currently occupying the land.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) built Thuyilum Illams - resting homes- across the North-East where thousands of Tamil fighters were laid to rest. Following the end of the armed conflict, the Sri Lankan army bulldozed over these cemetries and in some areas built army bases over them.

Families of fallen Tamil fighters said that due to the 14th SLNG Regiment's occupation of Theravil Thuyilum Illam, they are unable to commemorate their children and demanded that the land is released to them.

Preparations for this year's Maaveerar Naal began two weeks ago at Theravil Thuyilum Illam where Tamils will gather to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives for Tamil liberation.

Maaveerar Naal - or Great Heroes Day - remembers those who sacrificed their lives in the Tamil liberation struggle, and is marked on November 27, in memory of the first death of a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam cadre, Lt Col. Shankar who died in combat on November 27, 1982.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
