The Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) in Canada hosted its Annual Dinner and Awards Night for 2023 in Toronto last month, acknowledging and honouring individuals who have shown dedication to advancing justice, peace, and human rights.
The Awards Night recognized four outstanding recipients for their noteworthy contributions:
The Thurairajah Memorial Award was given to Maamanithar Vice-Chancellor Alagiah, the well-known academic for his contribution to education in the homeland.
The TGTE’s Youth Achievement Award was given to People for Equality and Relief in Lanka (PEARL) for their advocacy efforts to ensure the rights of Tamils in the homeland.
The TGTE’s President Nelson Mandela Memorial Award was given to Professor Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish a Canadian-Palestinian medical doctor and author for his contribution towards Palestinian liberation.
The S. J. V. Chelvanayakam Memorial Award was given to Mr. Raj Gunanathan, the President of Toronto’s Tamils Rehabilitation Organisation
The keynote speaker for the evening was Prof. Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, the recipient of the President Nelson Mandela Memorial Aware was born and raised in the challenging environment of Jabalia Refugee Camp in the Gaza Strip. He shared insights into the ongoing struggle for human rights and peace, drawing from his personal experiences and hardships.
The event was graced by the presence of distinguished dignitaries, including Toronto City Mayor Olivia Chow, Brampton City Mayor Patrick Brown, Minister of Infrastructure MPP Kinga Surma, and Minister for Seniors and Accessibility MPP Raymond Cho.
With over 500 guests from around the world, the event served as a significant platform for networking with community leaders, understanding TGTE's global initiatives, and celebrating those who advocate for justice, peace, and human rights.
The TGTE, a political formation advocating for fundamental civil, political, and human rights, including the right to self-determination for the Tamil people in the North and East of Sri Lanka, reiterated its commitment to democratic values, non-violence, and adherence to the laws of the countries it represents. The event showcased the TGTE's ongoing efforts to provide a political space for the articulation and realization of Tamil aspirations.
