TNPF declares intention to abstain from Sri Lanka's presidential vote

Ahead of a vote to decide Sri Lanka’s care-taker President, the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) have declared their intention to abstain from voting, stating on Twitter:

The statement added:

The decision follows massive unrest in Colombo, which has seen the Gotabaya Rajapaksa flee the country and Ranil Wickremesinghe assumed the position of both President and Prime Minister. In an earlier thread, the TNPF stated that they would not vote for Wickremesinghe and expressed their discomfort with other Presidential candidates.

They note that during the last Presidential election, Sajith Premadasa rejected a 13-point memorandum put forward by a collection of Tamil political parties. Candidates from the JVP have similarly opposed any move towards the devolution of powers.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
