The Turkish government claimed that two suspected militants who detonated a suicide car bomb after a standoff with police, were members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
Ankara’s Governor Erkan Topaca said that the man and woman were confronted by Turkish police, who were acting on a tip off. They refused to surrender, and instead detonated the bomb inside their vehicle. No member of the security forces were injured in the incident.
"The organization they are connected to is not clear yet, but according to information we have received, it is highly likely that (the man) is linked to the PKK," said Mr Topca. "The way the incident was carried out and planned points at the PKK."
The incident comes after Turkish police stated they captured a PKK militant on Friday who they claim was behind a “motorbike bomb” attack outside a police station in Istanbul. The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), a group that Turkey’s says is linked to the PKK, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Ten people were injured in the explosion, with a total of 6 arrests by security forces so far.
Meanwhile fighting continues in the province of Hakkari, where Turkish forces stated they killed 8 PKK militants last week.
