UN Resident Coordinator visits Jaffna

Marc-André Franche, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, conducted a visit to Jaffna, where he engaged with various authorities, civil society organisations, and stakeholders to discuss pressing issues affecting the region.

During his visit, Mr. Franche held a constructive dialogue with A. Sivabalasuntharan, the Jaffna District Secretariat, covering topics such as employment, land, and housing for internally displaced people. These discussions aimed to identify strategies and initiatives to address the challenges faced by vulnerable populations.

Highlighting the importance of inclusive economic development, Mr. Franche held discussions with civil society organisations, particularly those partnering with the International Labour Organisation. These organisations are dedicated to supporting small businesses run by women-headed households and individuals living with disabilities. The talks emphasised the significance of transparency, accountability, and equality under the law as essential components of any reconciliation effort.

One of the key meetings during the visit was with P. S. M. Charles, the Governor of the Northern Province. The discussions revolved around the multifaceted challenges related to stimulating the economy through employment opportunities, land allocation for civilians, and future support for resettlement efforts. Additionally, strengthening civil society and local governance structures was a central theme, as they play a pivotal role in facilitating inclusive and sustainable development in the Northern Province.

Continuing his outreach efforts, the UN Resident Coordinator also met with Prof. Sivakolundu Srisatkunarajah, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna as well.
