China and India have distanced themselves from the strikes carried out on Syria by the US, UK and France, with the Chinese government saying the strikes violated international law.
According to Reuters, the Chinese foreign ministry said that China has consistently opposed the use of force in international relations and that any military action that bypassed the United Nations’ Security Council violated the principles and basic norms of international law.
Meanwhile, India’s External Affairs Ministry has also urged restraint.
“We urge all Parties to show restraint and to avoid any further escalation in the situation,” a ministry spokesperson said.
“The matter should be resolved through dialogue and negotiations, and on the basis of the principles of the UN Charter and in accordance with international law.”
