A human chain protest took place in Jaffna, condemning the death threats made against former Mullaitivu District Judge T. Saravanajah, which ultimately led to his resignation from all his judicial positions.
The human chain extended from the Maruthanarmadam junction to Jaffna town, covering a distance of approximately 7 kilometers. This peaceful protest garnered participation from several political parties and organizations, including Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi, Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation, Eelam People’s Revolutionary Front, Tamil National Party, People’s Liberation Of Tamil Eelam, Tamil People’s Alliance, and Crusaders for Democracy Party.
In Kokkuvil, protestors were seen kneeling in front of a sculpture of Lady Justice, symbollically praying for justice to return to the North-East. The sculpture was draped in black cloth and the scale carried by Lady Justice was tipped heavily to one side with stones.
Additionally, police officers were seen gathering intelligence reports by photographing and documenting the protestors.
The demonstration aimed to denounce the threats and intimidation faced by Judge Saravanajah and to highlight concerns about the state of judicial independence and security for judicial officers in Sri Lanka.
