Militarisation in Tamil schools continues in Mullaitivu

The Sri Lankan military constructed a children’s park at a Tamil school in Mullaitivu last month, as it continued to consolidate its presence in Tamil schools across the region.

Soldiers from the 591 Brigade built a park at the Arrumaththukulam Tamil Maha Vidyalaya. At a military ceremony at the Tamil school earlier this month, Sri Lanka’s Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya, was the garlanded chief guest.

The latest venture into Tamil schools by the Sri Lankan military comes as civil society actors and local politicians continued to raise concerns regarding the continued military presence in the North-East.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
