A new Sri Lankan constitution is a "fundamental necessity" the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) spokesperson, M A Sumanthiran said whilst speaking at the 7th meeting on constitutional reform, held in in Galle this week.
"All the problems of the Tamil people won't be solved by a new constitution, but a new constitution is fundamental," he said. "Without this, no issue can be addressed."
"In a country with a permanent majority it is important to share powers of governance in such a way that all peoples have equal citizenship rights. Sri Lanka's Sinhala majority must itself acknowledge injustice of simple majoritarian rule and clamour for reform and justice for other peoples."
Colombo papers meanwhile reported that the TNA spokesperson had also told the meeting federalism was not essential.
The TNA have consistently won elections on a mandate for a federal political solution.
