NPC Minister refuses to hoist Sri Lankan flag

The Northern Provincial Council Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Water Supply, P Iyngaranesan has refused to hoist the Sri Lankan flag at an event in Mannar.

The minister was chief guest at the event in a school in Vellangulam.

According to the Colombo Gazette, Iyngaranesan said the flag does not represent the Tamil people in Sri Lanka and as long as the lion with a sword in its hand remains on the flag, it will be rejected by Tamils.

The TNA leader Sampanthan has previously defended his waving of the Sri Lankan flag at a May Day rally in 2012.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
