The Sri Lankan government has deployed the notorious Special Task Force, in order to protect foreign tourists in the south of the island after a group were assaulted earlier this month.
Police Chief Pujith Jayasundara said the move was a “temporary measure to stabilize the law and order situation” according to the Daily Mirror.
However, The Island quoted Tourism Development and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunga as stating if the number of police deployed was “not adequate to provide security to tourists” then the government would move to deploy the navy.
A group of Dutch and British tourists were assaulted in Mirissa, as they resisted attempts to sexually assault the women in the group.
